The Fifty Six City Council adopted an ordinance declaring the mayor’s seat vacant, approved a proposed budget for 2014, and heard the first reading of a new ordinance establishing rules and regulations for the water department, all at a special meeting Nov. 25.
The votes were unanimous with four council members present. Oma Jean Balentine was absent.
The ordinance declaring the vacancy states that Mayor Barbara Wallace has abandoned her position, had not attended a council meeting for about eight months, and has not performed duties of mayor during that time.
