County Addresses Overtime Issue

An ordinance designed to address the problem of excessive overtime and comp time for county jail staff was discussed and approved by the Stone County Quorum Court at its regular meeting April 14.

Justice of the Peace Stan Townsend explained the proposed ordinance, noting that the comp time totals for the detention officers continue to increase every month. The problem is that the jail is understaffed and that comp time pay equals overtime pay. He said comp time cannot work as it is intended in the current personnel policy without the jail being fully staffed by both full-time and part-time employees.

The new ordinance will provide pay increases for the second and third shifts at the jail as incentives for employees to work those hard-to-fill shifts. Also, it provides pay for “fill-ins” or as-needed employees at a flat rate in excess of $13 per hour but they would get no benefits and would not work more than 24 hours per week.
