Deputy, Resident Die in Shooting

Posted

A Stone County Sheriff’s Deputy and a resident were killed and a woman was wounded when gunfire erupted after officers responded to the residence for a welfare check July 18.

Sgt. Michael Stephen was one of three deputies who responded to 2021 Flag Road west of Fox for a possible disturbance, and he was first on the scene. As Stephen spoke to 32-year-old Erika Johnson outside the residence, gunfire erupted. Stephen, age 56, and resident Samuel Fullerton, 39, were killed, and Johnson sustained an injury that is reported to be non-life threatening.

The names and limited description of events were released by the Arkansas State Police Public Affairs Office through a news conference on Thursday afternoon, and a news release Friday.

Special agents of the Arkansas State Police Criminal Investigation Division are continuing to investigate the shooting incident. Upon completion of their investigation the case file will be presented to the prosecuting attorney for consideration with respect to the use of deadly force by a law enforcement officer.
