Fourth of July Celebrated

Fourth of July festivities were curtailed slightly by weather on Friday and Monday, but Saturday’s and Sunday’s activities went on as planned.

Friday’s “movie night” at the Mountain View City Park was postponed until Thursday at dusk, when (weather permitting) the movie “Yankee Doodle Dandy” will be projected onto an inflatable screen.

Saturday’s parade featured several floats, some of which were entered for judging. Faith Tabernacle Apostolic Church’s entry “Faith, Family & Freedom” won first place, followed by 4-H Agricultural and Livestock Club and Timbo Valley Assembly of God Church. Honorable mentions went to the Boy Scouts for “Freedom is Not Free” and to Stone County Honor Guard for “Grand Old Flag”.

A large crowd attended the pre-fireworks party at Stone County Fairgrounds, where there was music and dancing, along with cake walks and a bake sale sponsored by the Stone County Medical Center Auxiliary. Vehicles filled the fairgrounds for a close-up view of the fireworks show, which was executed by the Mountain View Volunteer Fire Department.

Department members have been assisting with the show for about 30 years.

Monday’s music programming was moved indoors to Courtsquare RV Park, but the rain cleared in time for the watermelon feast on the courtsquare.

KFFB 106.1 radio broadcasted live and conducted a prize drawing. The $106.10 cash prize was won by Sue Sweat of Fifty Six.
