Larry Sutton Retires

Bus driver spent more than 44 years on Signal Hill route

Larry Sutton will give up his seat on the school bus this fall for the first time in more than four decades.

Riding the bus until he graduated high school in 1975 and then driving the same route for 44 years, Larry has logged hundreds of thousands of miles on the road between Mountain View School and the Signal Hill community.

"Nobody knows the district quite like Larry does. He will be sorely missed, I can tell you that," Supt. Brent Howard said.

Howard said Larry would have to be the longest-tenured person currently working for the school, and his retirement will be a loss to the district.

"He is a huge asset to our school district, and we wish him nothing but the best in his retirement."

Larry has lived all his life on his family's place at Signal Hill and was just a year out of high school when the bus driver job came open.

"Freddie White was driving at the time, and I put in my application," Larry said. Larry got the job, and for the first several years he drove part time while also working at a service station. In 1983 he started working in the bus garage, spending his days in the shop as a mechanic's helper.

He was promoted to transportation supervisor in 1996, a position he has occupied for the past 25 years while continuing to drive his daily route.
