The filing period for persons seeking municipal office is open.
The filing period opened Aug. 3 and closes at noon Aug. 10. Candidates in the city of Mountain View and town of Fifty Six must file paperwork including a petition, political practices pledge and an affidavit of eligibility. Forms are available at the county clerk’s office in the Stone County Courthouse, and completed paperwork must be returned to the clerk’s office.
All municipal positions will be on this year’s ballot: mayor, clerk and six council positions for City of Mountain View; and mayor, recorder-treasurer and five council positions for the town of Fifty Six.
Mayor, clerk and recorder-treasurer are four-year terms, while council positions are two-year terms.
The number of signatures required on petitions varies according to position. Candidates will receive information on the number required when paperwork is picked up at the clerk’s office, which is open 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Monday-Friday. The phone number is 870-269-5550.
Individuals who wish to announce their candidacy as a news item must submit information to the Stone County Leader by Aug. 5.
