Pool To Open June 11

City applying for grant to revamp facility

Posted

The swimming pool at the Stone County Recreation Complex is set to open June 11, Mayor Roger Gardner told the council last Tuesday night.

He reported the pool has been repainted, is full of water, and currently running with no leaks. He commended city employees for their efforts to get the pool up and running.
He explained to the council that lifeguards need to be hired and quickly certified. The council voted to waive advertising for lifeguards in hopes of hiring those who had previously served as lifeguards. Ceredywn Holt will manage the pool, and maintenance employees are in place, Gardner added.

The city is currently applying for a 50-50 point-based grant to revamp the pool. Gardner said if a slide and handicap lift were installed it would boost the chance of the city receiving the grant.

Councilman Finis Brewer said from the information he had gathered at a grant meeting he had attended, the pool would be like new with a new liner and pool canopy and would last several years.

Gardner stated he hopes once the county completes the jail, it can help with funding the recreation complex.
Councilman J.K. Williams commented that the facility looked nice, and that he had counted 147 vehicles during recent games and the Mountain View Open disc golf tournament.

Gardner added they are looking at the park as a location to shoot off fireworks this year. He said it is doable and believes it would be nice to have a pre-show with some bands and have something like a big picnic for the entire community.
