A cold front that stalled over southern Missouri trapped moist air over northern Arkansas resulting in torrential rains in Stone County the night of July 16.
Reports of 6 to 14-plus inches were reported from Mountain View northwest to Big Flat. Flash flooding claimed camper trailers and more as water raged down the north and south prongs of Sylamore Creek.
At least two recreational vehicles floated away from Angler’s Holiday Mountain Resort at Allison and nearly 20 more were flooded, according to resort owner Chris McCollum.
After rainfall finally ended last Wednesday, observers gathered at the White River access at Allison, where the muddy Sylamore converged with the rising White River. They reported seeing numerous round hay bales, kayaks, a mini fridge and more float by. A half-submerged camper trailer smashed against the Highway 5 bridge piling and entered White River in pieces. Across the water, the boat dock at Anglers White River Resort, situated on the west bank of the river where the creek converges, appeared steady but showed obvious damage from being swamped.
County roads and bridges also were damaged.
