Women Veterans To Be Honored

Historical Society Meeting Sunday, 2 p.m.

Stone County's women Veterans will be honored at the quarterly meeting of the Stone County Historical Society on Sunday, June 9 at 2pm. The public is invited to be part of the celebration that will take place at the auditorium of the Stone County Museum at 206 School Avenue, Mountain View. The meeting will begin with the presentation of colors by the Stone County Honor Guard.

Speakers will include Josephine Linker Hart, a retired U.S. Army Colonel who began her military career with a tour of duty in Japan during the Vietnam War. In 2020 she retired as an Associate Justice of the Arkansas Supreme Court. Gloria Chitwood will discuss her service as a nurse in El Paso, Texas during the Vietnam War. MSgt Jessica Sterlin, Ret., Air Guard, will talk about serving  in Operation Iraqi Freedom and Operation Enduring Freedom. Hollie Scoma, who serves as District 3 Veterans Services Officer as well as Arkansas Women Veterans Coordinator will be the guest speaker. Scoma's office is located in Mountain Home.

The Arkansas Legislature voted in June 2023 to recognize June 12 each year as Women Veterans Day. The Stone County Historical Society is pleased that one of its members, Gloria Chitwood, will be honored by Stone Bank for her military service during the Vietnam era at a reception on June 12, 10am at the Stone Bank Pavilion. Chitwood currently serves as the Museum Volunteers Co-Chair.

The Society will also have available its newest publication, Volume 48. No. 1, Women of Distinction: Lovra Balentine McClung and Bessie Dobbins Jefferson James. 
 
A Stone County History Maker award will be presented at the conclusion of the meeting. Guests are invited to stay for refreshments following the event.

To become a member of the Stone County Historical Society, $20 annual dues may be mailed to SCHS, PO Box 210, Mountain View AR 72560. Members are entitled to receive the two publications each year at no charge. A list of publications available for purchase is on the website at stonecountyhistory.org/publications.
