All but about three of the 33 bean cooking teams braved the rainy conditions and started beans simmering at 7 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 26, for the 37th Annual Arkansas Bean Fest and Championship Outhouse Races in Mountain View.

The rain cleared to all but an occasional drizzle by mid-morning while visitors checked out the craft booths and entertainment, and visited with cooking teams as they stirred and tasted their concoctions.

Judge Holly Meyer of Heber Springs was the winner of this year’s Bean Cook-Off, with Laverne Andrews winning second place and Eldon Haynes taking third.

The Learning Tree “Wizard of Oz” crew won the prize for best costumes, and The Call won for best decorated area with the “Campin’ Around The Bean Pot” scene.

In the outhouse racing, perennial winners Jack’s Resort and JoJo’s Catfish Wharf took the gold toilet seat trophies for first place in the Stock Class and Modified Gas Class, respectively. Rural Special FFA won second place and Mountain View FFA third place in the Stock Class, while Stone Bank won second and Ozark Folk Center third in the Modified Gas Class.

It has been announced that starting in 2020, Bean Fest will be held on the fourth Saturday of October each year instead of the last Saturday, keeping the event from falling on Halloween.
