The Mountain View City Council has agreed to contact the highway department regarding the need for a crosswalk on West Main Street near the Special Services Center.
Resident Samuel Smith made the request at last week’s council meeting, saying he has nearly been hit twice while crossing to come and go from his apartment. Police Lt. Jeremy Beaudin noted there is also a school bus stop a that location.
Mayor Roger Gardner said the state highway department has to approve crosswalks across state highways, and the city is already consulting the agency about other locations. The request for a crosswalk near the new Carmina’s restaurant had been evaluated by state officials and it was noted that the sidewalks at the location were not ADA compliant, and there is an existing crosswalk within 200 feet.
The council discussed what measures might need to be taken, including additional signage, and slowing traffic.
Other potential locations such as at the Walmart intersection, and west of the Square were discussed. Gardner said the city should make a list of locations so the state could consider them all in one visit.
