The filing period for residents seeking seats in city government opened July 29 and closes Aug. 5.
The positions of mayor and clerk as well as most council seats in Mountain View and Fifty Six are up for election.
The City of Mountain View is completing the transition to four-year terms for council members this year. Three positions (Position 1 in each ward) were elected to four-year terms in 2024. Position 2 in each ward will be elected to four-year terms this year, resulting in staggered terms with three positions coming up for election in each two-year cycle.
Council seats up for election this year are held by Finis Brewer in Ward 1, B.J. Day in Ward 2, and Danny Simmons in Ward 3.
The positions held by Mountain View Mayor Roger Gardner and Clerk Ceredwyn Holt are up for election this year. They are four-year terms.
There are five positions on the council for the Town of Fifty Six, and all five are up for election, as are the positions held by Mayor Earnestine McDaniel and Recorder Christina Byrd.
The filing period opens July 29 and closes at noon Aug. 5. Candidates must file paperwork including a petition, political practices pledge and an affidavit of eligibility. Forms are available at the county clerk’s office in the Stone County Courthouse, and completed paperwork must be returned to the clerk’s office, which is open 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Monday-Friday. Candidates must be registered voters and reside within the jurisdiction to be represented, among other requirements.
The election will be Nov. 3.
