Copperhead Football Underway

It is purported to be young copperhead season, and that holds true in Mountain View, where about 90 youth football players in Copperhead jerseys take the field each week.

Mountain View Copperheads youth football teams drew a record number of players this year, and they are being managed by Trent and Megan Martin and Keenan Glenn.

“Ninety-one kids signed up to play. It’s a record number of players and lot of jerseys and equipment,” Megan said. “We wanted to grow the program and get more kids from Timbo and Rural Special in the program. Which we did. It’s been amazing.”

The coaching trio took over the job this season from Andy and Telisha Tinkle, who coached in the program for more than a decade.

Midway through the season, the 5th-6th Grade Copperheads team is undefeated, while the 3rd-4th Grade team is less than perfect in league play, but are also new to the field of play and the game rules, Megan noted.

The next home game is Oct. 10 vs. Melbourne. Teams take the gridiron at 6 p.m. The general public is urged to attend, with mild weather in the forecast. Megan says game spectators will have the opportunity to see boys grow a bit as they match up with the Melbourne team.

The Mountain View Beta Club will staff the concession stand, and players’ siblings will lead the cheerleaders.

This year’s Copperhead jerseys and helmet art was designed by Dusty Mitchell.

There are only a few games remaining in the season. The Copperheads play Oct. 7 at Yellville and away again at Cave City on Oct. 14, before the final game at home against Quitman Oct. 21.
