An unexpected volume of rock in the building site for a new jail to serve Stone County will add to the project’s cost.
Shawn Harding, business development director for Kansas-based HMN Architects, told a gathering of Stone County Justices of the Peace on Aug. 8 that 1,510 cubic yards of rock have been removed from the excavation site.
Harding said a geologic survey was inadequate in furnishing data needed for a precise calculation of the volume and hardness of rock in the building site.
A “rock clause” in the construction contract enables the excavator to charge $340 per cubic yard of rock removed from the site. The rock issue adds 65 days to the time estimated to complete the job which now will extend to November 2025.
