One of Stone County’s “familiar faces” will be less visible in the new year. After more than two decades, Nell Harrelson is retiring this week as manager of Stone County Recycling Center and Solid Waste transfer station.
Nell is familiar to most as the lady in the window, weighing vehicles as they pass over the scales, waving them on, and taking payments in the office.
She also does all the bookkeeping for the facility and oversees the rest of the sanitation and recycling staff.
Harrelson said she looks forward to retirement sometimes when they get busy, but she has enjoyed her job with Stone County Recycling.
“I like meeting people, and I like the work,” Harrelson said. Unlike other office work she has done, the sanitation and recycling center offers more variety.
“There’s always something different coming up.”
